Sitting in front of my computer and typing these words now, I can’t believe it’s my last day already. I wore the exact same shoes as my first day. I didn’t plan to do that, but it is like some kind of a secret ritual hee hee >.< Today is Friday. Usually people come to office a little bit late on Fridays, yet I arrived before 9. I looked around, it’s empty. I remembered the first day I came here, I was amazed by the office. It’s so spacious, white, modern, clean, and neat! I love all those french windows and how the offices are designed. Though it was so quiet that I felt a little bit intimidating at first, I now completely get used to it.
Looking back these three months, I spent day and night trying to improve my English and keep up with the trend. As one of the very few foreigners in this office, I have to push myself to work extremely hard. Starting from having no idea how to write those captions to knowing all the ‘formats’ and writing ’em faster and faster, I can see myself improving each week.
I think fashion is a very competitive industry. That’s because fashion itself is so fast-paced. Everything is fleeting. No wonder why all the job descriptions in the fashion industry require you to have multi-tasking skills!
Another thing I learned was detail-oriented. Before I came here, I thought I was a very detailed person. But when I ignored some little mistakes and was pointed out by Lauren (my supervisor), I realized oh no….I am not good enough! Lauren is really good at spotting all those little errors, whether it’s just a letter misspelled, or unbolded words, she’ll ask me to make changes. I really appreciated that! Being careful is a good habit to have for a lifetime.
If you ask me what I learned most so far, I would say fashion writing. I helped Lauren pitch different stories, pull all the products, conduct photo research, edit the products and resize them, upload to the Content Management System and write the captions. I accompanied her to complete every step and witnessed how a story went live on the website. You thought it was just typing and uploading? You’re wrong! There are so much to do behind that. A very good stories can take up to days to compose. Actually a lot of creativity are involved in different projects. That’s why I love this internship so much!
Of course, it can be very tedious and tiresome sometimes. Working 8 hours every day is exhausted, not to mention you have to keep your brain functioning all the time. There would be multitasks at the same time. Endless emails, G-chats….just lots of stuffs to do! But I love that feeling so much! I love being organized and having schedules. I once saw Lauren’s desktop. She would make some notes and have a to-do list to remind herself (me too!!). I know she’s way more busier than me and I believe she suffers from a lot of pressure as well. But she never pushes me or being mad at me, she just allows me to do it at my own pace. She’ll encourage me when I do something great, and tell me when I should have done better. I feel so grateful!
In addition to the editorial side, I was lucky enough to work for the audience development team as well. I met Sofia in the kitchen one day. I didn’t know she was the Director of Audience Development at that time. We just chatted a little bit and I told her I would love to know more about her department! One week later, she invited me to be part of her team as well! I was so excited!! I helped Carson drive traffic to our sites through stumbleupon all the stories.
I also feel fortunate enough to speak with the CEO of our company twice! Hillary is so nice. I once went to her office and she had a private conversation with me one-on-one. I have to admit I was nervous, but her smile dissolved all those nerve-racking moments. Thank you Hillary if you happen to read this!! Even though I haven’t spoken with Katherine before, I always admire her style. She would appear at the office very chic and stylish everyday. Gosh, she is everything I want to be!! Both Hillary and Katherine are very inspirational. I really really love them!
Being the intern at Clique Media has brought me many gifts. I feel so proud when I tell others that WhoWhatWear is the third most popular fashion website in the United States. That reputation was built by everyone in our company. We all work towards the same goal and hope to make our websites more well-known. It feels so great! I guess that’s the charm of our two pretty CEOs. They built all these in 10 years!! Isn’t that amazing?!
Ok…I promised you guys I would mention you in my post! I met Peter, Arvin, and Brian this afternoon. We had lunch together at the Design Cafe. They are all from the Engineering team. Dee Dee is also working at that department! Thank you guys for being so nice to me. I’ll miss my time with you all!!
Last but not least, I want to thank Kevin and my family for your all-time support. Thank you for encouraging me and inspiring me as always. Love from Sweet Connie.
